We are trying to get high fructose corn syrup out of our diet. We read several articles about how this is part of the obesity problem in this country. It is not an easy task. It is my understanding that plain corn syrup is not the same thing so some items do have it. I will share some of the products that we have found to be free of this sweetner.
Catsup is one item that most of us use and normally has HFCS. While you can get special organic catsups at a health center, we have found that Heinz has a great organic catsup and it is even available at Walmart. The Lucerne company that provides items for the Safeway chain (Tom Thumb in Texas), also has an organic catsup. We haven't opened that one yet but the Heinz is excellent. We find that it doesn't have that watery part that usually comes out of the bottle of regular catsup, even Heinz own brand. It also tastes fresh. Another item is, sadly my favorite worchestershire sauce, Lee & Perrin, has HFCS, while French's does not. I will adjust.
My best tip for staying away from HFCS is to shop at an Oriental market for sauces, etc. They usually carry products from other countries, England, France, India, etc. They also haven't found out about HFCS.
It is amazing how fresh things taste when regular sugar is used instead of HFCS. As a Dr. Pepper drinker, I recommend trying some from Dublin, Texas where they still use regular sugar in their bottling plant. I now buy Blue Sky sodas and drink them responsibly since they are high in calories and sugar.
I would love to hear constructive comments on this subject.
